Ebeid inaugurates Cairo International Book Fair Prime Minister Dr. Atef Ebeid inaugurated on January 21 the 36th Cairo International Book Fair. The Premier was accompanied by the Ministers of Culture, Education, Local Development, Electricity, Awqaf, Public Enterprises, Environment, Transport and Military Production and the Head of the General Book Organization, in addition to a number of prominent writers and intellectuals and ambassadors. More than 97 countries are taking part in the fair with 3,150 publishing houses including 900 Arab, 650 foreign and 1,600 Egyptian publishers. This year's fair embodies the modernization movement of the cultural and intellectual domains in Egypt through President Hosni Mubarak's era, asserted Ebeid. Meanwhile, Ebeid visited the important pavilions participating in the fair including that of Arab and foreign countries as well as press institutions and major publishing houses. In addition, the Prime Minister toured the pavilions of the ministries including Defence, Interior, Education, Civil Aviation and Awqaf as well as the universities pavilions and State Information Service (SIS). This year's fair which is held under the motto: "Towards Society of Knowledge" has special characteristics since, its forums and symposia will focus on discussing all the intellectual and cultural issues through men of letters, said Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni. On his part, Samir Sarhan, Head of the General Egyptian Book Organization said that this year's forums will discuss a host of important issues regarding Arab culture, information society and political action in Egypt as well as communications and their impacts on people through participation in democracy process and discussing the future of Arab-Israeli conflict. The fair's symposia will also tackle the youths’ role in information technology and their vision on the future of the small-scale projects and promoting the political and cultural awareness of the parties programs, added Sarhan.
